Who was Allama Iqbal, in two minutes

Iqbal was a poet, a thinker and a lawyer. He wrote in Urdu and in Persian. He studied in Lahore, then at Cambridge in England and in Munich in Germany. So he knew both the East and the West very well.

In 1930, at the Muslim League session in Allahabad, he spoke about a separate Muslim state in the north-west of India. Many people see this speech as the first clear picture of Pakistan. He did not live to see Pakistan. But Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah carried the idea forward, and Pakistan was made in 1947.

Two ideas come up again and again in his poetry. The first is khudi. It means self-respect, self-belief and knowing your own worth. The second is the shaheen, a falcon. For Iqbal, the shaheen is a free bird. It flies high, lives on mountains and does not eat what others leave behind. He wanted young people to be like that. This is why so many Iqbal Day posts have a 🦅 in them.

7 real Iqbal couplets (Urdu + Roman Urdu + meaning)

A lot of "Iqbal quotes" on social media are fake. Somebody writes a nice line, adds "– Allama Iqbal" at the end, and it goes viral. So we only share couplets that are well known and found in his own books. Each one has Urdu script, Roman Urdu and a simple English meaning. Copy the version you like.

Couplet 1 (from Bal-e-Jibril)

خودی کو کر بلند اتنا کہ ہر تقدیر سے پہلے
خدا بندے سے خود پوچھے بتا تیری رضا کیا ہے

Khudi ko kar buland itna ke har taqdeer se pehle
Khuda bande se khud poochhe, bata teri raza kya hai

Simple meaning: Make your self (khudi) so strong that, before every decision of fate, God Himself asks you what you want. It is about self-respect and hard work.

Couplet 2 (from Bal-e-Jibril)

ستاروں سے آگے جہاں اور بھی ہیں
ابھی عشق کے امتحاں اور بھی ہیں

Sitaron se aage jahan aur bhi hain
Abhi ishq ke imtihan aur bhi hain

Simple meaning: There are more worlds beyond the stars. Love and passion still have more tests ahead. Do not stop at small goals.

Couplet 3 (from Bal-e-Jibril)

تو شاہیں ہے پرواز ہے کام تیرا
ترے سامنے آسماں اور بھی ہیں

Tu shaheen hai, parwaz hai kaam tera
Tere saamne aasman aur bhi hain

Simple meaning: You are a falcon. Flying is your job. There are more skies in front of you. (Same ghazal as the couplet above.)

Couplet 4 (from Bang-e-Dra (Bachche ki Dua))

لب پہ آتی ہے دعا بن کے تمنا میری
زندگی شمع کی صورت ہو خدایا میری

Lab pe aati hai dua ban ke tamanna meri
Zindagi shamma ki soorat ho Khudaya meri

Simple meaning: My wish comes to my lips as a prayer: O God, make my life like a candle that gives light. Many Pakistani schools sing this in the morning assembly.

Couplet 5 (from Bal-e-Jibril)

نہیں ہے نا امید اقبالؔ اپنی کشتِ ویراں سے
ذرا نم ہو تو یہ مٹی بہت زرخیز ہے ساقی

Nahin hai na-umeed Iqbal apni kisht-e-veeran se
Zara nam ho to ye matti bahut zarkhez hai saqi

Simple meaning: Iqbal has not lost hope in his dry field. With a little water, this soil is very fertile. In short: young people have great potential.

Couplet 6 (from Bang-e-Dra (Tulu-e-Islam))

سبق پھر پڑھ صداقت کا عدالت کا شجاعت کا
لیا جائے گا تجھ سے کام دنیا کی امامت کا

Sabaq phir parh sadaqat ka, adalat ka, shujaat ka
Liya jayega tujh se kaam duniya ki imamat ka

Simple meaning: Learn again the lesson of truth, justice and courage. You will be asked to lead the world.

Couplet 7 (from Bal-e-Jibril)

نگہ بلند سخن دل نواز جاں پرسوز
یہی ہے رختِ سفر میرِ کارواں کے لیے

Nigah buland, sukhan dil-nawaz, jaan pur-soz
Yehi hai rakht-e-safar mir-e-karwan ke liye

Simple meaning: High vision, kind words and a passionate heart. This is all a leader needs for the journey.

How to spot a fake Iqbal quote

  • It is in modern English. Iqbal wrote poetry in Urdu and Persian. A short English "motivational quote" with his name is almost always made up.
  • It talks about modern things. Mobile phones, exam results or today's politics are a clear sign.
  • The language feels off. His Urdu is classic and rich. Fake lines often use very simple, modern words and break the rhyme.
  • There is no book name. Real couplets come from books like Bang-e-Dra, Bal-e-Jibril, Zarb-e-Kalim or Armaghan-e-Hijaz. Search the first line on Rekhta or the Iqbal Academy Pakistan website to check.

Not sure about a line? Write your own caption and say it is "inspired by Iqbal". That is honest, and it still carries his message. All the statuses, wishes and captions below are original lines written in that spirit. They are not Iqbal's words.

15 Shaheen and Khudi style names

Want to change your game or profile name for the week? These names use words from Iqbal's poetry: shaheen (falcon), khudi (self), parwaz (flight), sitara (star) and kehkashan (galaxy). They suit gamers and normal profiles both.

5 simple ideas to make your Iqbal Day post stand out

  1. Explain one couplet. Do not just paste it. Add one line about what it means to you. People read and share these more.
  2. Use Urdu script and Roman Urdu together. Some friends cannot read Urdu script on a phone. Giving both helps everyone.
  3. Tag a teacher. Many of us learned "Lab pe aati hai dua" in school. Thank the teacher who taught it to you.
  4. Keep the style light. One stylish word with a ꧁꧂ frame looks good. A whole paragraph in fancy fonts is hard to read.
  5. Stay respectful. Iqbal is a national hero. Avoid memes that mock him or put fake words in his mouth.
